THE LOWDOWN

CAMILA OSORIO

20-year-old Camila Osorio won her first WTA title last season at a home tournament in Colombia on her favoured clay. The current world number 53 was wildly inconsistent last season but clearly capable of big things on all surfaces after a run to the Tenerife Ladies Open om hardcourts late last year, beating the top seed Elina Svitolina and in-form Camila Giorgi en route.

NAOMI OSAKA

Former world number one and reigning Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka is on her way back to the top of the sport after a disrupted 2021 season in which she took several breaks from the tour. The 24-year-old is a four-time Grand Slam champion already with wins at the US Open in 2018 and 2020 zig-zagging with wins in Melbourne last year and in 2019 for a four-year streak in which she has won a major tournament. A potential round of 16 clash with Ash Barty is in many ways the final this tournament deserves and the winner of it a solid favourite for the title.

THE PREDICTION

World number 53 Camila Osorio has not played a competitive match since losing in the final of the Tenerife Ladies Open last season and the Colombian is likely to find herself overpowered here by the reigning champion. Naomi Osaka is an intensely powerful champion on and off the court and she should be ready to go in the first round here despite pulling out of the semi-finals of her warm-up event last week. Hold off until the Japanese takes to court but Osaka should blast through this first meeting with Camila Osorio in straight sets.
