THE LOWDOWN

CAMERON NORRIE

World number 12 Cam Norrie was asked at the start of 2021 to name a player he thought would have a huge year. Upon naming himself, the 26-year-old quickly followed suit with a stunning breakthrough season on tour that saw him reach six finals in total and win two of them, with his shock run to the Indian Wells Masters crown a stupendous achievement. His eventual 52-25 record was bettered only by a few top players and he was rewarded with a late call-up to the ATP Finals in Stefanos Tsitsipas’ absence.

SEBASTIAN KORDA

World number 40 Sebastian Korda saw off an excellent 2021 campaign by finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Next Gen ATP Finals. The 21-year-old won his first ATP title last season at the Emilia-Romagna Open but runs to the quarter-finals of the Miami Masters and Wimbledon were even more impressive. Korda also made the round of 16 at Roland-Garros back in 2020 but this is his Australian Open debut.

THE PREDICTION

Sebastian Korda was the winner of his only previous encounter with Cam Norrie – at the right end of last season to encounter the new British number one – way back in January in the semi-finals of the Delray Beach Open. Norrie was world number 74 that week but embarking on one of the most brilliant and unexpected rises up the ATP rankings in recent years. The current world number 12 took some warming up at the ATP Cup but his performances were improving throughout the three defeats to Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz and that is more match practice than Korda is bringing to Melbourne. The American looks set for a big 2022 but this is a really tough opener for both players and taking the 12th seed Norrie to earn at least two sets here as the likelier of two capable winners seems the suitably cautious option.
