THE PREDICTION

World number 92 Brandon Nakashima is a player capable of top 30 tennis on his day but he has struggled to find enough consistency since winning the 2022 Next Gen ATP Finals. There have been a few encouraging signs this season, particularly his three-set exit to Jiri Lehecka, whom he beat to win that up-and-comers’ year-end tournament two years ago, at Indian Wells last month. A straight-sets win over Duje Ajdukovic sees the American settled in at the Houston Open and he can count on a partisan atmosphere in his favour in this first professional clash with fellow youngster Rinky Hijikata. Nakashima beat Hijikata on clay at the French Open juniors back in 2018 but this second clash should come a lot closer with the Aussie enjoying the better recent form. The world number 80 overcame Christopher Eubanks’ fierce serve in two tight tiebreaks on Monday to look the part here in Houston and backing him to earn at least a set looks the most sensible way to avoid a full result.

TIP: RINKY HIJIKATA TO WIN A SET
