BRANDON NAKASHIMA
20-year-old Brandon Nakashima got his 2022 season off to a great start with a straight-sets victory over Fabio Fognini at the Sydney Tennis Classic. The current world number 68 should break the top 50 sooner rather than later this season if he can maintain the level that saw him break onto the scene last summer with back-to-back finals reached at the Los Cabos Open and Atlanta Open. This is the American’s first main draw appearance at the Australian Open but he stunned John Isner at the same stage of last year’s US Open.
MATTEO BERRETTINI
World number seven Matteo Berrettini enjoyed his best season on tour last year with a run to a first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon where he took the first set in a four-set defeat to Novak Djokovic. The 25-year-old won his first ATP 500 event at Queen’s Club over the summer and he will be an interesting player to follow this season with plenty more competition coming from the likes of Hubert Hurkacz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jannik Sinner. Berrettini was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open last season through injury at the round of 16 stage.
THE PREDICTION
This is no gimme for world number seven Matteo Berrettini. The Italian improved after a shaky start at the ATP Cup last week saw him lose in straight sets to Alex de Minaur and his fitness is still not 100% unquestionable after he pulled out of last season’s ATP Finals. The 25-year-old is a hugely popular figure inside the top 10 but he can occasionally need some time to get going in major tournaments with four-set victories over Taro Daniel and Guido Pella at last year’s Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, suggesting an outright pick for the Italian is wise here. Nakashima is an exciting young talent well capable of taking this to four sets.
