Former world number 20 Daria Saville reached the quarter-finals of the San Diego Open last week to build on an encouraging semi-final exit at the Hobart International in January. The 30-year-old Aussie, formerly known as Daria Gavrilova, has endured a tough return from her latest injury lay-off but wins over the likes of Sofia Kenin and Lin Zhu this year suggest she can move back inside the top 60 at least with a clean bill of health. World number 78 Bernarda Pera qualified the hard way this week but she takes a tour-level losing streak of five matches into Indian Wells to look desperately out of confidence. The 29-year-old is at her best on clay but the notoriously slow hardcourt conditions here in the desert could give her game an edge in this encounter, although a gutsy performance from Saville should see the Aussie sneak through. Back Saville to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
