THE LOWDOWN

ARYNA SABALENKA

World number eight Aryna Sabalenka beat in-form Jessica Pegula to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open without dropping a set, breaking the American six times in impressive fashion. The 24-year-old looks to be turning her season around now after a torrid start to 2022 and she will be a serious contender everywhere she goes moving forwards with a superb game for all courts – illustrated by her reaching the semi-finals of both Wimbledon and the US Open last season. Sabalenka owns three Masters titles amongst her 10 WTA title overall, including last season’s Madrid Open.

AMANDA ANISIMOVA

World number 32 Amanda Anisimova blasted past Danielle Collins on Thursday to back-up a brilliant victory over Belinda Bencic in the second round. The 20-year-old is making ground on her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st first set in 2019 after she burst onto the scene at Roland-Garros as a teenager, reaching the semi-finals before losing in three tight sets to eventual champion Ash Barty. Anisimova won her second WTA title at the start of this season at Melbourne 2, with her first coming in 2019 at the Bogota Open on clay.

THE PREDICTION

There is pretty solid evidence to suggest that Amanda Anisimova can reach the Italian Open semi-finals here after she beat Aryna Sabalenka in three sets last week at the Madrid Open to lead the Belarussian 4-0 in their head-to-head. Anisimova claimed her third victory over Sabalenka only a few weeks before in the round of 16 at the Charleston Open, also in three sets, for one of three victories on her favoured clay, suggesting the American has all the tools required to disable Sabalenka’s enormous serve and forehand. A record like this is always a daunting thing to follow, especially with Sabalenka improving all the time, but Anisimova was exceptional on Thursday and she can be backed to at least win a set as the likelier of two very capable winners. This could come to the finest of wires.
