THE LOWDOWN

ANNA-KAROLINA SCHMIEDLOVA

World number 87 Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova has lost both of her matches so far this season in Melbourne and Sydney. The 27-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 26th back in 2015, with the last of her three career WTA titles coming at the Bogota Open in 2018.

JELENA OSTAPENKO

24-year-old Jelena Ostapenko burst onto the scene in 2017 when she won Roland-Garros just after her 20th birthday. The world number 27 struggled to find that level for a few seasons in the wilderness but a first title since 2019 at the Eastbourne International last summer and a great run to the semi-finals of Indian Wells suggests she could have a big year in 2022.

THE PREDICTION

Ostapenko could be a serious dark horse here in Melbourne with so much attention elsewhere in the draw and she was the winner of the only previous meeting between these two players in three sets at the Cincinnati Open way back in 2016 as a teenager. The Latvian was unfortunate to meet in-form Paula Badosa this week but it should be practice enough to win outright over Schmiedlova with straight sets likely but a risk at this stage.
