THE PREDICTION
World number 10 Jannik Sinner snatched victory from the jaws of defeat on Tuesday with a comeback win against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets. The 20-year-old saved three match points before really getting going in his first match since reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, where he lost comfortably to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Former world number one Andy Murray struggled throughout his first round clash with Christopher O’Connell but eventually improved when it mattered to seal a comeback win of his own. The 34-year-old is still without a permanent coach and is suffering for it but he has lost to the eventual champion in four of his last six tournaments -including to Aslan Karatsev in the Sydney Tennis Classic final last month.
Murray was the winner of his first meeting with Sinner at this stage of the Stockholm Open back in November, with a straight-sets win taking out the top seed there. They were due to play again in the third round of the Australian Open before the Brit’s shock loss to Taro Daniel and with his performances suffering since then the tables are likely to be turned. Sinner needed a warning sign on Tuesday to get his campaign going but he should be the better for it now and much of this match depends on the level Andy Murray can bring to the table. Take Sinner to win outright, although at least a set is the sensible option.
