THE PREDICTION
Two old foes face off for what could be a length battle on Wednesday as both former number one Andy Murray and former number seven David Goffin both desperately seek out a return to form. 36-year-old Murray won each of their previous seven encounters in straight sets, including that memorable victory to see Great Britain win the Davis Cup Finals in 2015, but this certainly seems like Goffin’s biggest chance yet to beat the ailing star, despite ailing himself in recent seasons. Three-set victories over Luca Nardi and Maxime Cressy in qualifying give the Belgian a leg-up in match practice but Murray has improved, a little, on some woeful recent form since late last season to win each of his last two first round matches and he will do well to take confidence from this head-to-head into a match that could be decided by whomever holds their nerve the better.
Murray has lost to the eventual finalist in each of his last two tournaments to suggest he could be turning some sort of corner and, whilst Goffin will be eager to finally break this duck, the Belgian’s head can go down far too easily these days. Back Murray to win at least a set as the likelier of two players out of form to edge through.
