THE PREDICTION

World number seven Andrey Rublev won the Bastad Open last month with an impressive victory over former champion Casper Ruud, backing-up his most prestigious title to date claimed at the Monte-Carlo Masters back in April. The 25-year-old is an excellent all-courter who also finished runner up to Alexander Bublik at the Halle Open on grass in June before avenging that defeat to make the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. World number 59 Mackenzie McDonald should not be underestimated, though, after the American grabbed a very impressive straight sets result over Aslan Karatsev. The 28-year-old has enjoyed the best form of his career in 2023 but a few injuries earlier this year have limited his gains in rankings. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record with a four-set match in Melbourne going McDonald’s way back in 2019 and Rublev levelling in three sets en-route to the Dubai title last season. That makes taking Rublev to win outright the suitably cautious move, although backing McDonald to earn at least a set is tempting.
