THE PREDICTION

World number 10 Jelena Ostapenko began what has been an excellent return to some of her best tennis here in Rome this time last season, beating a host of top clay-courters before coming unstuck in the semi-finals against eventual champion Elena Rybakina. The 26-year-old began 2024 like a freight train, reaching at least one final in singles or doubles in each of her first three tournaments, but she has struggled to find that initial intensity since winning the Linz Open in February, with a 6-6 record since.

World number 43 Anastasia Potapova began her Rome campaign in solid fashion with a straight-sets victory over Xiyu Wang but she has struggled to make a significant dent on clay, by her standards, this season and she has failed to win back-to-back matches since making the quarter-finals at Indian Wells. This is a tough call so early in the draw but Ostapenko looked in decent shape before a round of 16 exit to Ons Jabeur in Madrid. Back the Latvian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
