World number 33 Camila Giorgi will be seeded 30th at the Australian Open after a surprise best year on tour last season in which she suddenly found some searing form. The 30-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International before injury halted a blistering run and she went on to make the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympic Games and then claim a first Masters title at the Canadian Open. Giorgi’s best run at a Grand Slam was a quarter-final exit at Wimbledon in 2018.
THE PREDICTION
This match looks a risky one to call any which way with Camila Giorgi’s last match coming way back in October in a loss to Camila Osorio in the semi-finals of the Tenerife Ladies Open. The Italian can often take some time finding her rhythm on tour with her world-class serve and forehand a very fine instrument that requires a lot of tuning and Anastasia Potapova could sneak a win here if her opponent does not come out firing. For that reason, the shrewd option here looks to be taking Potapova to win at least a set with more than whiff of an upset about this one.
