THE PREDICTION

16-year-old Alina Korneeva won the Girls’ Singles title here in Melbourne last season and she qualified the hard way to make her professional debut on Sunday before coming back from a set down to stun Sara Sorribes Tormo. The Russian beat Mirra Andreeva to the junior title 12 months ago but she has since seen her compatriot burst on the main tour, reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon on her debut, to set an exciting benchmark for her own tour debut this season. This looks a step too far at the moment, though, against world number 12 Beatriz Haddad-Maia – who will be pleased not to have to play out another four-hour marathon against old foe Sorribes Tormo. 27-year-old Haddad-Maia made the semi-finals at Roland-Garros last summer and she capped off her best season yet with victory at the WTA Elite Trophy in November. Korneeva will be backed to the hilt as the teenage sensation here but take Haddad-Maia to weather some early storms to win outright – probably in two.

TIP: BEATRIZ HADDAD-MAIA TO WIN
