THE PREDICTION

World number 101 Alexei Popyrin lost in three sets to Taro Daniel in qualifying but the Aussie came through as a lucky loser to make his fourth appearance at Indian Wells. The 23-year-old suffered a horrendous season last year but whilst he still has plenty of work to do on tour a run to the third round of the Australian Open in January saw a very encouraging five-set victory over Taylor Fritz. World number 93 Zhizhen Zhang fares a decent chance at winning here after qualifying well this week to make his Indian Wells debut but that second chance for Popyrin will be a powerful force to have to stop. Zhang has not won at tour level since making the quarter-finals of the Napoli Cup last October but taking Popyrin to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to lean here in leaving the victor up to chance.
