THE PREDICTION

This could be a thrilling first meeting on tour between world number 62 Aslan Karatsev and number 85 Alexei Popyrin, both of whom have much higher ceilings than their current rankings reflect. 29-year-old Karatsev had endured a concerning 12 months on tour before suddenly bursting into form at the Madrid Open earlier this month, stunning the likes of Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev before losing to eventual runner-up Jan-Lennard Struff in the semi-finals. The Russian first announced himself at the Australian Open in 2021 when he became the first qualifier to reach the semi-finals since the beginning of the Open Era but whilst he has excelled on clay over the last few season he is yet to make it past the second round at Roland-Garros. 23-year-old Popyrin is a solid all-courter who enjoys a big game environment and he, similarly, exorcised a woeful 2022 season with a stunning upset over Taylor Fritz at the Australian Open in January. The Aussie more recently upset Felix Auger-Aliassime, for the second time this year, en-route to the round of 16 at the Italian Open and a three-set defeat to Holger Rune suggests he can be very competitive in these conditions.

This match looks an outside candidate for five sets but otherwise back Karatsev to come through the outright winner. It would be wise to leave this one out of an accumulator whilst we gauge both players’ levels in Paris.
