THE PREDICTION
World number 19 Alexander Zverev conceded just three games to Alex Molcan on Tuesday, beating the Slovak in the first round for two tournaments running and three times on clay after first meeting at Roland-Garros, where he emulated his run to the semi-finals. The 26-year-old had looked the better player against eventual champion Rafael Nadal at the French Open last summer before a horrendous foot injury ended his season and he is still working his way back to peak level after returning at the start of 2023. World number 144 Maximilian Marterer beat fellow German Rudolf Molleker in straight sets on Tuesday and it is likely that he will be backed by the majority of the home crowd as the underdog against another compatriot, with recent reports of Zverev’s off-court behaviour continuing to sour his relationship with tennis fans. The pair have yet to meet on tour but Marterer is at his best on clay and the left-hander could cause a few issues if he finds his best form. Zverev should win in straight sets here all the same but there is the slightest scent of a decider required that makes the outright call a suitably cautious concession.
