World number three Alexander Zverev ended last season as the most in-form player on tour after winning a second ATP Finals title via impressive results over Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev. The 24-year-old enjoyed his best season yet after a few years in the wilderness following his breakthrough in 2017 and 2018, with a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games a stand-out achievement alongside the year-end tournament. Zverev has reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the Australian Open in his last two seasons.
DANIEL ALTMAIER
World number 91 Daniel Altmaier set a career-high of 84th late last season but the 23-year-old should be able to exceed that at some point soon, especially on the clay. The German is playing only his 29th tour-level match ever here on his debut at the Australian Open but a stunning run to the round of 16 of last year’s Roland-Garros is proof of what he can achieve in the future, not least a victory over then world number eight Matteo Berrettini.
THE PREDICTION
An all-German affair looks likely to go only one way here in the first round of the Australian Open as Alexander Zverev meets Daniel Altmaier on court for a first time. The world number three may find this match-up more of a challenge on the clay if Altmaier’s shock run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros is anything to go by but on a fast hardcourt the reigning ATP Finals champion should sweep through here in three sets. Zverev is one to watch in Melbourne with only Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev for natural predators.
