THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Cam Norrie brings a concerning four-match losing streak into the US Open that stretches back to his shock defeat to eventual quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks at Wimbledon. The 28-year-old has looked stressed on court on many occasions this season, perhaps due to an enormous playing schedule over the past two seasons, but a three-set defeat to Gael Monfils in Cincinnati two weeks ago has improved with age – as has his defeat to eventual Toronto finalist Alex de Minaur. 22-year-old Alexander Shevchenko comes into his US Open debut at a career-high ATP world ranking of 83rd after recently stunning Sebastian Korda to make the Washington Open quarter-finals but his best results have come on clay this season, including a remarkable streak of wins in Madrid on and off the tour. A first meeting between the two should be going Norrie’s way in straight sets at his best but the Brit is far from that now and potentially hampered in his belief. Take Norrie to earn at least two sets inside or Shevchenko to earn at least one but leave this match out of an accumulator. This match is a reasonable candidate for five.
