THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Hubert Hurkacz lost a final for the first time here last summer as Pablo Carreno Busta came back from a set down to ruin the Pole’s incredible five-final streak. 26-year-old Hurkacz claimed a sixth ATP title in Montpellier back in February but he will be concerned with his overall form for 2023 after so many three-set battles edge through against players he should be beating easily and some worrying recent defeats. World number 28 Alexander Bublik recently stunned the tennis world by staying focused long enough to utilise his mercurial talent in a remarkable run to the Halle Open, where Hurkacz was champion last summer. 26-year-old Bublik beat the likes of Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev to the Halle crown and he took that form into a huge effort at Wimbledon before Rublev gained revenge in five fierce sets in the round of 16.
The Kazakh lost to Gael Monfils in straight sets in his first match in Washington last week to suggest that there may be a cooling off period before he finds that previous level and he trails Hurkacz 5-1 in a pretty convincing head-to-head, even if Hurkacz has not fully convinced this year. Take Hurkacz to earn at least a set and consider adding at least a tiebreak in the match with both players well accustomed to securing their own sets.
