This will be their second meeting with the veteran Croatian easing to a straight sets victory on the grass of Stuttgart four years ago.
However, Cilic is on the brink of tumbling back outside the top 100 after his solid run on grass during the summer has been followed by six straight defeats.
Basilashvili sits at 104 in the rankings but is the more form player, shining in qualifying on the back of a run to the last eight in Chengdu.
If Cilic finds the rhythm and confidence on serve that has been missing for some time, he’ll be a tough nut to crack, but Basilashvili has a decent hardcourt game and may push the 37-year-old all the way.
