THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Aleksandar Kovacevic will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 84th after claiming his first Grand Slam win on his Australian Open debut. The American did well to twice come back from a set down against in-form Alejandro Tabilo, who stunned the field to win his maiden title in Auckland last week to bring a five-match winning streak into Melbourne. Kovacevic came through qualifying to enjoy a four-match streak of his own but he will have to recalibrate for the biggest match of his career against world number 15 Karen Khachanov, who reached the semi-finals here last season.
27-year-old Khachanov came back from a set down to beat Daniel Altmaier in a tight encounter on Monday but the Russian will be pleased after losing his first match of the year in Hong Kong two weeks ago. Khachanov finally won the fifth ATP title of his career in Zhuhai last September, five years on from his last at the 2018 Paris Masters, but he has struggled for consistency since. Back the Russian to win outright, with four sets about as likely as three.
