THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina produced a stunning display to snap Alexander Zverev’s six-match winning streak on Wednesday, conceding just three games to the former world number two. The 24-year-old conceded one game fewer to oust J.J. Wolf in the first round to suggest that his recent strong performances in defeats, most notably to Novak Djokovic in the third round at Roland-Garros, have been building up to a run like this. World number five Casper Ruud passed a significant test on Wednesday with a straight-sets victory over in-form Jiri Lehecka. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open last September to prove his potential on a hardcourt but he has, arguably, underperformed at this level with all 10 of his ATP titles coming at 250 events and just one of those away from his favoured clay.
Both players would prefer to clash on the red surface in this third encounter between the two but their 1-1 head-to-head record could not be finer poised with a win apiece, both in five sets at the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2019 and at Roland-Garros two years ago. Davidovich Fokina’s level must not be underestimated this week but Ruud is perennially undervalued in these conditions. Three sets seem likelier than two, so take the Spaniard to earn at least one in this form or risk the decider. Leave this match well away from any accumulators.
