World number 39 Ajla Tomljanovic beat wildcard Hailey Baptiste in three sets to reach the second round of Indian Wells. The 28-year-old has a way to go if she is to emulate her excellent run to the round of 16 here last October, though, during which she stunned Garbine Muguruza in the second round over three sets.
SORANA CIRSTEA
31-year-old Sorana Cirstea set a career-high of 21st back in 2013 but she looks capable of breaking that this season, almost a decade later, if she continues her strong form. The Romanian won last season’s Istanbul Open on clay for a second career WTA title, with her first coming 13 years before at the Tashkent Open.
THE PREDICTION
If Sorana Cirstea is to break her career-high ranking she will need to be quick as the points from her Istanbul Open title will soon disappear. The current world number 27 has never faced Ajla Tomjlanovic at tour-level but two defeats in qualifiers over the years suggests the Aussie could be the slight favourite here. However, Cirstea’s recent run to the semi-finals of the Lyon Open, and a brilliant run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January, make backing her to win at least a set the sensible move here on form.
