29-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic will start the 2023 season at a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd after enjoying her best year on tour in 2022 and Team Australia will be desperate to see her regain that form as they trail Team GB 2-0. Tomljanovic reached the quarter-finals of her last two Grand Slams in London and New York but she struggled after losing to Ons Jabeur, losing five of her last nine matches. That run includes a straight-sets defeat to world number 98 Harriet Dart at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in November as one of the Brit’s many shock results in 2022. 26-year-old Dart enjoyed her best season by far in 2022 with a surprise run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells and the quarter-finals at Eastbourne amongst eye-catching results against the likes of Camila Giorgi, Elina Svitolina and most recently Paula Badosa at the BJK Cup. Home advantage and the desperate need for Australia to get a point on the board favour Tomljanovic here but this should come a lot closer than perhaps expected. Back Tomljanovic to win at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
