Second seed Simona Halep is yet to be troubled in Melbourne with two comprehensive straight-set wins over Destanee Aiava and Elena Ruse. The former world number one spent the last few months of last season getting back to her working level after several injury issues disrupted much of 2021 but she should re-join the WTA’s top 10 sooner rather than later this year. She faces sixth seed Viktorija Golubic for a first proper test, with the Swiss up to a career-high 43rd in the WTA world rankings after her best season ever last year. The 29-year-old won Gold alongside Belinda Bencic at the Tokyo Olympic Games and impressed elsewhere, especially over the grass season. She is yet to drop a set in Melbourne too but a fit and firing Halep should be too much ground to cover here. Take the two-time Grand Slam champion to win outright.
