31-year-old Irina-Camelia Begu enjoyed some excellent form late last season, with a runners-up finish to Anett Kontaveit at the Cleveland Championships a highlight, and she should not be underestimated here. The Romanian took out the top seed Jessica Pegula in straight sets on Tuesday and then came back from a set down to beat in-form Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16 but Amanda Anisimova will be a huge test again. The former world number 21 has struggled for a few seasons to reach the heights of her breakthrough as a teenager but at 20 years old she is on the steady climb back. Anisimova beat the fifth seed Sorana Cirstea in straight sets on Thursday and she can take at least a set against a second-successive Romanian here, although a winner looks a difficult call.
