World number one Ash Barty had to come back from a set down to Coco Gauff but a three-set victory over the superb teenager is a great way to start a new season. The 25-year-old is a two-time Grand Slam champion after winning Wimbledon last year but as of yet the Australian Open has evaded her. 23-year-old Sofia Kenin, on the other hand, claimed her first and only Grand Slam to date at the 2020 Australian Open just before the covid-19 pandemic could decimate her chances at building on some world-beating form. The current world number 12 can re-join the WTA’s top 10 soon enough but after saving three match points against Ajla Tomljanovic in the round of 16 this looks a tough task against Barty. Kenin beat the Aussie in their last meeting, the semi-finals of the aforementioned Australian Open, but the world number one leads their head-to-head 4-2 and she can make it 5-2 with an outright victory here.
