Top seed Aryna Sabalenka was pegged back by Ajla Tomljanovic on Thursday but the Belarussian managed to come through her first match back since contracting covid-19 in three sets. The 23-year-old has won two WTA titles this season at the Abu Dhabi Open and Madrid Open but ultimately she will have been disappointed to miss out on reaching a first Grand Slam final. World number 37 Ekaterina Alexandrova has ridden her good fortune at coming through a tough first match at the Kremlin Cup due to Ons Jabeur’s retirement with a straight-sets win over Anhelina Kalinina. The Russian beat Sabalenka to lift the Shenzhen Open trophy back in 2017 but Sabalenka beat her there in the second round two years later and then again in the quarter-finals of the St. Petersburg Open to lead their head-to-head record 2-1. Her match fitness is still questionable after covid so taking her to win outright here remains something of a risk. Alexandrova to win at least one could be the shrewd move here.
