THE PREDICTION
World number 14 Diego Schwartzman was excellent against an out-of-sorts Andy Murray on Thursday evening, making full use of perhaps some tired legs from the Brit’s four-hour match on Tuesday. The 29-year-old is through to the quarter-finals of a tournament for the third-successive time but a 6-0, 6-2 loss to eventual Indian Wells champion Cam Norrie last week is a warning sign he will take in mind against another vastly improving player in 20-year-old Brandon Nakashima. World number 79 Nakashima also lost to Norrie in the final of the Los Cabos Open back in July in what was an incredible run of form for the American. He qualified well for the European Open with wins over Fernando Verdasco and Pierre-Hugues Herbert and, whilst his first round victory over an ailing Alex de Minaur was a big scalp, his three-set victory over Henri Laaksonen late on Thursday was all the more impressive.
Nakashima winning this would not be a huge surprise with Schwartzman well capable of losing his mojo but if the Argentine maintains his level from yesterday he should be backed to come through this tough first encounter. Taking the American to earn a set looks a reasonable alternative too.
