THE PREDICTION
Thiago Monteiro overcame his fellow Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in the first round at Delray Beach, facing down and saving eight of his experienced opponents’ nine break points on his own serve and taking four of his own. He will be up for a totally different match now against the second seed, John Isner, who receives a bye to this round of 16 and will be fresh and well-drilled for action. There is a sense of destiny around this title for American favourite Isner as he chases one of the few US titles he has yet to win here. He could be understandably rusty but is wisely playing in the Men’s Doubles here too with the obvious intention of getting his service motion in full, devastating swing ready for the Singles draw on Saturday. Monteiro and Isner have played just one before, this time last year, when the Brazilian pushed an out of form Isner to a fourth set before the veteran managed to see it through and Monteiro could force a decider here too. Plenty will be up to how much rhythm Isner can find on his racket but he should win a match that features at least one tiebreak here to progress to the quarter-finals.
