THE PREDICTION
33-year-old Fabio Fognini was one of many players to struggle after the restart of the tennis season last August but motivation will have been a huge factor in that for the firebrand Italian and his ability should not be underestimated this season. He has, however, dropped down the rankings to world number 17 and should struggle to re-join the top 10 now with so many young players improving all at once. He fought off a dogged Michael Vrbensky in round one here at Antalya and now faces Jeremy Chardy, also 33, for a sixth time in their career. World number 72, Chardy, is on the wrong end of a 4-1 head-to-head record with Fognini but he will be competitive throughout this eye-catching round of 16 match and three sets looks a distinct possibility here. In fact, the result is pretty difficult to call at this early stage, particularly as Fognini is certainly a player who utilises a crowd’s love, or hate, to amp up his performances. All five of their previous meetings have seen a set go to either player and so picking this match to go to a decider could be the safest option here. Fognini should win this on a normal day but we have not seen normal on tour for some time.
