THE PREDICTION

It is good to see David Goffin winning tennis matches again after such a horrid run of form last season that threatened to show its head in the first round three-set victory over Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The Belgian number one and current world number 16 dropped just two games in the round of 16 against Spanish wildcard Nicola Kuhn and should be in good shape for the quarter-final here where he meets Stefano Travaglia for the first time. The Italian world number 75 enjoyed a good second half of the season last year and looks to be in similar shape in 2021 after beating two exciting young players in Miomir Kecmanovic and Emil Ruusuvuori to reach this stage and he will be Goffin’s toughest test yet this week. It is still too early to decide if 30-year-old Goffin is back to the height of his powers but it seems Travaglia may well be at his, so this match going to three sets looks a good compromise for want of a tricky result to call. If pushed, the second seed has to be backed but it would not be a shock to see Travaglia in the semi-finals.
