Belgium have recent history with the Davis Cup, having finished runner-up in 2015 where they lost in the famous Great Britain win and 2017, but aside from talisman David Goffin they have very little to threaten the better nations here. That being said, it was Goffin who almost let the side down against Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan when he lost the first set but he rallied to take the decider while Steve Darcis made short work of Santiago Giraldo. Belgium lost to the world number one doubles pairing of Juan Farah and Robert Cabal but Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen played well and took the first set there before losing.

Alex de Minaur and Nick Kyrgios got their respective jobs done with little fuss over Colombia, both coming through their singles matches in straight sets. The surprising result was their doubles success over Colombia’s No.1 ranked pairing of Robert Farah and Juan Sebastien Cabal. John Peers and Jordan Thompson combined to take the first and deciding set tiebreak to win this tie 3-0 and that should worry other nations here in Madrid, with John Millman a great option to have not even been utilised at this stage.
THE PREDICTION
Belgium might have fancied their chances in the doubles match here but John Peers and Jordan Thompson beat the world number one pair on Tuesday night and that will give the Aussies a huge lift coming into this Group D decider. This tie hangs on the initial balance of David Goffin vs Alex de Minaur, which should be a fantastic opening match and could go either way. Even though De Minaur is arguably in better form, Goffin’s Davis Cup pedigree suggests he could take this first match, while Nick Kyrgios should have no trouble at all beating Steve Darcis. Australia should qualify for the quarter-finals, though it may come down to the doubles.
