- Brisbane Broncos suffered a third defeat in their last four outings as they fell short in their quest to do the double over Cronulla Sharks and that loss leaves them needing a win in their final game of the season to have any chance at avoiding finishing in 15th spot.
- After claiming the wooden spoon last season, head coach Kevin Walters has guided his side to a better year but only barely and this last contest will be used to try and lay a platform for better things next season.

- Newcastle Knights booked their spot in the finals in dramatic circumstances as Mitchell Pearce slotted a last-gasp field goal to edge Gold Coast Titans and make it five straight wins for the Knights.
- In a cagey affair, neither side took control of the affair and it needed Pearce’s effort to separate the teams with that win allowing head coach Adam O’Brien the luxury of resting a handful of players for this last clash of the regular season.
THE PREDICTION
Brisbane Broncos have endured another poor season with things not
going to plan for new head coach Kevin Walters despite avoiding a second
successive wooden spoon. They will finish at the wrong end of the
ladder once again but there is some light at the end of the tunnel with
the club hoping their recruitment for next year can help them turn the
tide. They can also lay down a marker here for next year by prevailing
in their final game of this season but having lost their last four
matches against Newcastle Knights, this is a tall order for them. The
Knights also come into this on the back of a five-game winning streak
and they can make it six here.
