Who is the current world record holder of the men’s 100m? Usain Bolt (JAM) with 9.58 in Berlin on 16th August 2009

PREDICTION

The men’s 100m race is arguably the biggest and most eagerly anticipated event in any Olympic games and this one will be the same. Shock winner from Tokyo, Italy’s Marcell Jacobs, is back to defend his title and he did win the European Championship gold earlier this year in Rome.

However, the leading contenders for the race are set to be Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and Team USA runner Noah Lyles. There is very little to separate the two but the experience that Lyles has of winning the gold in the World Championships last year, as well as already being an Olympic medallist when he won the bronze in the men’s 200m in Tokyo, may well be enough to give him the slight edge.

TIP: NOAH LYLES (USA) TO WIN

WOMEN’S 50M FREESTYLE

Who is the current world record holder of the women’s 50m freestyle? Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) with 23.61 in Budapest on 29th July 2023

PREDICTION

The likes of Meg Harris and Shayna Jack will compete for gold this time around for Australia having beaten swimming legend Emma McKeon in Australian qualification for the race. Both of those swimmers, as well as world record holder Sarah Sjostrom, USA’s Gretchen Walsh and Anna Hopkin of Team GB make up a strong women’s 50m freestyle field.

Whilst Sjostrom has not been performing as well as she was when she set the world record time in Budapest at the World Championships last year, she is the heavy favourite to take home the Olympic gold on Sunday.

TIP: SARAH SJOSTROM (SWE) TO WIN

WOMEN’S UNEVEN BARS

Where is the women’s Uneven Bars taking place? Bercy Arena, Paris

Who is the reigning Olympic champion in the women’s Uneven Bars? Nina Derwael (BEL)

PREDICTION

Defending champion Nina Derwael, of Belgium, is back to go for back-to-back gold medals in the women’s uneven bars but she came through qualification in fourth place in what is a highly competitive women’s Artistic Gymnastics field this summer.

Sunisa Lee, who took bronze in the event three years ago, is also up there alongside Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour and Qiu Qiyuan of China. There was a hefty lead for Nemour in qualifying but 17-year-old Qiyuan, who won the gold medal in Antwerp at the World Championships last year, looks like a really good value bet here.

TIP: QIU QIUYAN (CHN) TO WIN
