John Castaneda: 33-year-old aiming for bounce-back win
John Castaneda (21-7) is coming off a unanimous decision loss at the hands of Daniel Marcos in June so the 33-year-old is looking to get back on track here. Prior to that, he had won four of his last five and was building some good momentum. He was scheduled to face Douglas Silva de Andrade last week but that fight was scratched and now he is lined up to meet Chris Gutierrez.
Chris Gutierrez: 29-fight vet also facing new opponent
Chris Gutierrez (21-6-2) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Quang Le back in August so he will be looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since 2022. Gutierrez was supposed to fight Jean Matsumoto last week but that fight was shelved so he is now paired off against Castaneda which should make for a good fight.
John Castaneda vs Chris Gutierrez Prediction
John Castaneda and Chris Gutierrez have had very similar careers paths building up impressive resumes outside of the UFC and then coming in and reaching a similar level.
Neither have shown the quality to trouble elite fighters but both are incredibly solid pros who can be proud of the careers they have put together.
That makes this fight a tough one to call and the odds support that with both fighters even in the betting.
Both fighters are incredibly durable and it is hard to see anything other than this fight going to the scorecards.
We have a marginal preference for Gutierrez in this one. He has fought some quality opponents in recent bouts like Song Yadong and Pedro Munhoz and while he has lost both, he stuck in there and took both to a decision. He gets our vote but it really is a pick’em fight.
Prediction: Fight to go the distance
