THE LOWDOWN

Portimonense

It has been a disappointing 2022/23 Primeira Liga campaign for Portimonense as they languish in the bottom-half of the table. There has been little excitement for the club and they will be aiming to just get the season over and done with.

The home team come into this on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat away to bottom-of-the-table and already mathematically relegated Santa Clara in their most recent outing, last weekend. That was their third defeat in four matches as they finish the season with a bit of a whimper.

The lack of enthusiasm and entertainment of the home team is represented by their lack of goals throughout the campaign. They have managed to score just 25 times this season, which is the fewest in the entire league; it is one fewer than both of the automatically relegated sides, Pacos de Ferreira and Santa Clara.

Arouca

After a poor run of form in the month of May, Arouca managed to overcome that with a much-needed and vital 1-0 victory at home to Chaves, last weekend. That victory has confirmed a top six finish and, as a result, UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.

That pivotal win came thanks to a 61st minute penalty from Guinean winger Morlaye Sylla. It followed three successive Primeira Liga defeats and does return Arouca to European football for the first time since they were beaten by Olympiacos in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League playoffs and just the second time ever.

The Portuguese Primeira Liga has a fair reputation for being one of the lowest scoring leagues in Europe and that is reflected by even the better sides, those finishing in the European spots, struggling to hit the net. In fact, despite their European qualification, Arouca have managed just 34 goals this season with just 71 goals coming in their 33 matches.

THE PREDICTION

With very little to play for this weekend, on the final match day of the 2022/23 Portuguese Primeira Liga season, this isn't likely to be a game that is thrilling for the neutrals. For different reasons, both of these sides will be simply seeing out the season and looking ahead to next year. For Portimonense, it will be a case of trying to improve on their bottom-half finish, whilst Arouca will be in pre-season training early in order to prepare for their UEFA Europa Conference League qualification campaign. There has been an average of just 2.47 goals per game in the Primeira Liga this season and this encounter is unlikely to do anything to improve that.
