THE LOWDOWN

BOAVISTA

Boavista are one of just two sides, alongside Belenenses outside of ‘Os Tres Grandes’ (The Big Three) in Portuguese football to win the Primeira Liga title, doing so at the turn of the century. They begin this season as one of a few sides capable of being drawn into the relegation battle but also looking up towards the top six and the UEFA Europa Conference League spots.

They began their season in dramatic fashion with a shock 3-2 defeat of reigning champions Benfica in a feisty affair at home in which they went into second-half stoppage-time at 2-1 down but managed to turn the game around. They have followed that victory up with a 4-1 annihilation of a struggling Portimonense side, in a game whereby they were 3-0 up inside 22 minutes. That means they begin the third match day of the 2023/24 campaign sitting at the top-of-the-table.

CASA PIA

Following promotion to the top-flight for the first time ever in 2022, Casa Pia enjoyed an impressive 2022/23 Primeira Liga campaign in which they challenged for the European spots for much of the campaign before eventually fading into the middle-of-the-table. They have kept the majority of the squad intact and, most importantly, their ageing but excellent goalkeeper Ricardo Batista.

Filipe Martins remains in charge of Casa Pia, too, as he has been throughout their rise to through the divisions since 2020. They have begun the 2023/24 season with similarly impressive performances. Firstly, they swept aside newly-promoted Farense, who are seeking to emulate Casa Pia in the top-flight this season, with a 3-0 hammering and then pushed Sporting CP all the way, eventually losing the match by two goals to one.

THE PREDICTION

Boavista’s outstanding start to the 2023/24 campaign is not necessarily something entirely sustainable. They aren’t expected to compete for the top three or anything ridiculous like that but they will be pleased with a run towards the top six and back-to-back victories is a sign of that. They face a Casa Pia side that will, once again, simply be aiming to avoid relegation and move into the middle-of-the-table. Given their start to the season, as well as their home advantage, a bet in favour of Boavista looks the way to go for this one.

TIP: BOAVISTA TO WIN
