THE LOWDOWN
UDINESE
After winning six successive matches towards the start of last season, Udinese ended up finishing in the bottom-half of the Serie A table with just five victories in their remaining 30 matches. The Friulians have stuck by Andrea Sottil but the Pozzo family are under pressure and the north east club have effectively been one of the worst teams in Italy for around 12 months.
The home team begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places and remain winless after six matches with three draws and three defeats so far. They come into this on the back of back-to-back defeats and were hammered by four goals to one in Naples against the defending champions.
GENOA
Under the ownership of soon to be majority shareholders of Everton, 777 Partners, Genoa gained promotion back to the top-flight last season, winning the Serie B title after being relegated in 2022. Alberto Gilardino saw them home after Alexander Blessin was poached by Union Saint-Gilloise mid-way through the campaign.
After an impressive summer transfer window in which Genoa signed Mateo Retegui among others, the visitors have started the season well in terms of performances and they got a marquee result in midweek, too, as they hammered Jose Mourinho’s Roma 4-1. They have been inconsistent but entertaining so far.

THE PREDICTION
Udinese, as mentioned, have probably been the worst side, if not close to the worst side, in Italy’s elite league for around 12 months now. It is not, therefore, necessarily a fluke or entirely unsurprising that they have struggled once again at the start of this season. They now face a Genoa side with plenty of attacking options and Albert Gudmundsson and Mateo Retegui capable of wreaking havoc on a vulnerable defence. Given that, a double chance bet in favour of the away team looks the way to go for this one.
TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE - GENOA TO WIN OR DRAW
