In 2022, Lecce gained promotion to the top-flight once again and then survived quite comfortably in Serie A last season playing a nice and easy on the eye, ambitious style of football. Over the summer, though, they lost their manager Marco Baroni to Hellas Verona and had to replace him with former Parma and Sampdoria coach Roberto D’Aversa.
The home team have started the 2023/24 campaign with two victories and a draw in what has been a surprisingly impressive beginning. Firstly they defeated Serie B side Como by a goal to nil in the first round of the Coppa Italia before defeating a Lazio side in disarray on the opening day of the campaign. Then they managed an impressive 2-2 draw in Florence away to Fiorentina.
SALERNITANA
The recent history of Salernitana is a bizarre and turbulent tale with the club nearing expulsion from Serie A after their first promotion in years before being saved at the final moment. They then performed the great escape and the managed a comfortable mid-table finish last year until they, once again, collapsed towards the bottom end of the table after sacking Davide Nicola, who led them to their surprise survival in 2022.
There has been some more relatively heavy and aggressive investment over the summer but, once again, they begin the season as one of the favourites for relegation back down to Serie B. They defeated Ternana by a goal to nil in the first round of the Coppa Italia before back-to-back draws to kick off their Serie A campaign. Firstly at the Stadio Olimpico, drawing 2-2 with Roma, and then finishing at one apiece against Udinese a week later.

On paper these are two relatively evenly matched sides that will be expected to be struggling down at the bottom end of the table throughout the campaign. So far this season, though, they have both pulled off impressive results against more fancied opposition and will both be very pleased with their starts.
