THE LOWDOWN

JUVENTUS

Massimiliano Allegri is coming under serious pressure at the J Stadium in Turin but he got some much-needed respite in midweek as Juventus defeated Lazio by two goals to nil in the first-leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final tie with second-half goals scored by Federico Chiesa and then Dusan Vlahovic.

Prior to that defeat of Lazio, they had suffered a 1-0 loss to the same opponents in the league at Stadio Olimpico after returning from the March international break. In the league, they have collapsed away from Inter at the top and now even behind AC Milan after just one win, against struggling Frosinone, in their last eight matches.

FIORENTINA

After reaching the finals of both the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, Vincenzo Italiano’s Fiorentina are aiming to go a couple of steps further this time around as they prepare for a UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final in midweek having come into this one on the back of the first-leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final.

In that cup semi, which is against Atalanta, they edged past the Bergamasci by a goal to nil at the Artemio Franchi in midweek with a first-half goal from midfielder Rolando Mandragora. In the league, they have slipped firmly into the middle-of-the-table with just one win in their last five matches.

FIORENTINA

I Viola head to Turin with only one injury concern as Oliver Christensen remains unavailable but they will be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend.

THE PREDICTION

This one is a rivalry, perhaps a one-way rivalry from Fiorentina’s side, brought about by the transfer of Roberto Baggio from Juventus to Fiorentina back in the 1990’s. The two teams have much bigger priorities than league form for the rest of this season with Juve still comfortable in the top four or five and focused on the cup, whilst Fiorentina will be focused on their upcoming UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final first-leg against Viktoria Plzen. The two teams have been underwhelming in the league and another fairly frustrating watch for the neutral would seem likely.
