THE LOWDOWN

NICE

It has been a bizarre but generally impressive campaign from Nice so far this season with Franceso Farioli at the helm of the Riviera club. The southerners begin the 23rd match day of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign sitting in the top three and the UEFA Champions League spots but they come into this one on the back of some poor recent form.

They were most recently beaten by a goal to nil at Parc OL against Olympique Lyonnais with Orel Mangala scoring a 22nd minute winner for Lyon in that match. That result means that Nice have managed just one victory in their last five matches in Ligue 1 with goal scoring issues, that have been a problem throughout the season, having a major impact.

CLERMONT

Pascal Gastien remains in charge of Clermont, despite it now seeming quite clear that they will finally realise what was always likely ever since their promotion a couple of years ago and that is a return to Ligue 2 this season. They begin the 23rd match day of the campaign sitting rock-bottom in France’s top-flight.

The visitors have managed just three victories in their 22 matches so far this season as they continue to struggle for any sort of form. They come into this one on the back of a 3-1 loss to Stade Rennais in their most recent outing, last weekend and were also dealt the blow of Maximiliano Caufriez being sent off in the 77th minute.

THE TEAM NEWS

NICE

Nice have a couple of injury issues for this weekend as midfielder Sofiane Diop and Hichem Boudaoui unavailable for the visit of Clermont.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Bulka; Lotomba, Todibo, Ndayishimiye, Bard; Sanson, Rosario, Thuram; Cho, Guessand, Laborde

CLERMONT

Both Maximiliano Caufriez and Elba Rashani are unavailable due to suspension this weekend, whilst Alan Virginius is missing through injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Diaw; Pelmard, Matsima, Zeffane, Armougom; Gonalons, Gastien; Boutobba, Cham, Allevinah; Nicholson

UNAVAILABLE: Rashani (Suspended), Caufriez (Suspended), Virginius (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, Nice have had major goal scoring issues throughout the campaign, despite the fact they currently sit in the top three. They have managed to score just 22 goals in 22 games so far this season with only the bottom two teams in the league, Metz and Clermont, having managed fewer than that. These sides have combined for just 38 goals. Nice should have more than enough to see off rock-bottom opposition but any victory is expected to come with few goals.
