THE LOWDOWN
MARSEILLE
It has been a turbulent week or so for Olympique de Marseille with the club deciding to swap managers on Monday and appoint their third boss of the campaign. Gennaro Gattuso, who replaced Marcelino earlier this season, was relieved of his duties and replaced by Jean-Louis Gasset, who began the recent Africa Cup of Nations in charge of eventual winners Ivory Coast, but he left the job after the group stages.
Marseille have been in really underwhelming form for a couple of months after a strong autumn. They went into the second-leg of their UEFA Europa League knockout playoff tie against Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek on the back of being beaten by a goal to nil by Stade Brest in Ligue 1 last weekend, making it no wins in six in the league.
MONTPELLIER
Armenian coach Michel Der Zakarian began the campaign under pressure and that pressure has only grown as the 2011 French champions languish in a relegation battle in Ligue 1. However, they come into this on the back of collecting a vital three points in what was dubbed as a six-pointer at Stade de la Mosson, last weekend.
Montpellier faced fellow strugglers Metz at home and handily defeated them by three goals to nil with goals coming from Issiaga Sylla, Modibo Sagnan and then Teji Savanier. That much-needed victory ended a five-match winless run of form in the league that has them hovering just above the bottom three and the relegation places.
THE PREDICTION
In recent seasons, these two sides have put in some entertaining displays with all but one of their last nine matches featuring both teams scoring. Marseille’s 22 matches have consisted of 53 goals, whilst Montpellier have had 51 goals come in their 22 games. Both teams have endured really difficult campaigns but will hope, for different reasons with Marseille’s managerial change and Montpellier winning against Metz, that they have or are turning a corner. As a result, an entertaining and high-scoring match is in store.
TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
