Graham Potter is enduring a difficult start to his tenure as Chelsea manager. Things have been complicated and made difficult by their spending splurge, both in the summer and winter windows, with The Blues having a squad that is missing key components and weak in key areas, most notably up-front.
Their striking issues were shown most prominently in their 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in their UEFA Champions League Last 16 first-leg during the midweek, when they were genuinely very good in the second-half but lacked the composure and quality to finish. That result means they have failed to score three of their last four matches.
Chelsea have managed just four wins in their last 18 matches across all competitions with their opponents in those wins being Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb. They do now face bottom-of-the-table and manager-less Southampton so Potter could be tempted to name a fairly attacking line-up.
Edouard Mendy remains injured so Kepa Arrizabalaga is the uncontested number one in the Chelsea goal with Benoit Badiashile likely to start in the back four, having been left out of the UEFA Champions League squad but beginning to start in the Premier League. Badiashile will play alongside either Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana or Thiago Silva with Koulibaly and Silva both starting in midweek but they are ageing so may well be rested and rotated.
The same level of rest and rotation is expected for left-back with Marc Cucurella likely to start ahead of Ben Chilwell, after replacing the Englishman off the bench at Dortmund the other day. The cover for Reece James is not at the same level, though, so he should keep his place at right-back.
Enzo Fernandez has already nailed down a starting spot so, whilst a Chelsea team is difficult to predict, he is one that you can expect to see in nearly every match in midfield. Alongside Fernandez, Mateo Kovacic is the likeliest starter with N’Golo Kante still out injured and Conor Gallagher lacking form.
In the three behind the striker, Mason Mount is expected to return to the starting eleven on the left-hand side with Joao Felix being granted his personal preference of playing in the number ten spot. Mykhaylo Mudryk had an underwhelming outing at Dortmund and at West Ham so Noni Madueke will be confident of retaining his Premier League spot at Stamford Bridge.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is available after being left out of their UEFA Champions League squad but the Gabonese is still unlikely to start with Potter favouring Kai Havertz as the number nine. Christian Pulisic and Armando Broja remain sidelined with injuries. Raheem Sterling could also be deployed up-front but the Englishman is also a doubt due to injury. He was not involved in the squad during the midweek.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Kepa; James, Thiago Silva, Badiashile, Cucurella; Kovacic, Fernandez; Mount; Madueke, Felix, Mount; Havertz
UNAVAILABLE: Mendy (Injured), Kante (Injured), Pulisic (Injured), Broja (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Chilwell (Injured), Sterling (Injured)
