THE LOWDOWN

TOTTENHAM

  • Tottenham fans will have been extremely frustrated at how their team meekly bowed out of the Carabao Cup in midweek, losing to Chelsea for a second time in two weeks, but both the players and manager Antonio Conte know that beating fierce rivals Arsenal here will go a long way to appeasing those supporters.
  • No doubt Heung-Min Son proved a big miss for Spurs in midweek and the South Korean attacking midfield remains out for the next few weeks, whilst Conte will be hoping Sergio Reguilon will be available after a suspected injury kept the left-wing-back out of the Chelsea game.

ARSENAL

  • An outstanding defensive effort from Arsenal saw them emerge from Anfield this past Thursday with a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie with Liverpool despite seeing midfielder Granit Xhaka sent off in the first half, however the physical effects of such an effort remains to be seen ahead of this Sunday.
  • Xhaka’s red card sees him suspended for the North London Derby, leaving Mikel Arteta with a lack of options in central midfield with both Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny both at the Africa Cup of Nations.

THE PREDICTION

When these two North London neighbours look horns, fireworks are always in prospect and this match is set to be no different. Son’s injury, combined with Arsenal’s lack of available central midfielders means that neither side will be at full strength and it remains to be seen how much of an effect this will have on the contest. Both will be well aware of the consequences that a defeat would bring in terms of morale within the entire club with emotions always at an all-time high on derby and for that reason, a tense encounter is likely. Antonio Conte and Mikel Arteta have each been credited for building a strong defensive foundation within their respective teams and clear-cut chances are likely to be at a premium throughout. With that in mind, consider backing under 2.5 goals to be scored over 90 minutes for what would be the fifth time in the last six matches involving Tottenham in all competitions.

Tip: UNDER 2.5 GOALS

*This match has since been postponed due to a mixture of injuries and positive Covid-19 cases within the Arsenal squad.
