THE LOWDOWN

LIVERPOOL

  • The absence of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane was really felt for the first time by Liverpool this past Thursday as they failed to break down an Arsenal side reduced to ten men in the first half of their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, the match ultimately finishing 0-0.
  • Jurgen Klopp plumped for a Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Takumi Minamino front three and despite the blank it would be no surprise if he kept faith in the trio for the visit of Brentford with striker Divock Origi out injured, although youngster Kaide Gordon may also be in Klopp’s thoughts following a stand-out performance from the 17-year-old in the Reds’ 4-1 win over Shrewsbury in the FA Cup third round last weekend.

BRENTFORD

  • Brentford succumbed to a comprehensive 4-1 loss away at Southampton in midweek, but cannot afford to rest on their laurels as they get set to face Liverpool just four days later at Anfield, the sort of fixture their fans will have dreamt about for many years before promotion to the Premier League.
  • Rico Henry could be in line for a return from injury at Anfield and should he be passed fit, then will likely start at left-wing-back with Sergi Canos (if fit) moving across to the right, however the Bees remain without goalkeeper David Raya, Josh Dasilva, Frank Onyeka, Charlie Goode and Julian Jeanvier.

THE PREDICTION

Despite 17 shots against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, just one on target said it all regarding Liverpool’s lack of potency without Salah and Mane, but they have no choice but to find a way of improving their conversion rate if they are to be successful here. It may help that they are facing a Brentford side without a clean sheet in their last nine fixtures in all competitions. Motivation will be high for Liverpool with the Premier League’s top two having faced each other the day before and against a weaker opponent, the hosts are expected to find some extra cutting edge compared to what they showed on Thursday, doing enough to pick up a comfortable three points and extend Brentford’s winless run away from home in the top flight to seven games.
