THE LOWDOWN

CRYSTAL PALACE

It had been a really difficult start to life at Selhurst Park for former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner but the Austrian pulled off a shock win at Anfield last weekend. The Eagles, playing a genuinely nice and easy on the eye style of football, edged past title challenging Liverpool by a goal to nil with a first-half winner from Eberechi Eze.

Prior to that, Palace had been winless in five matches since winning Glasner’s first game in charge against struggling Burnley in south London. They are not yet entirely clear and safe of the drop but they do begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting eight points above the bottom three and the relegation places with six games to go.

WEST HAM

West Ham United come into this one on the back of an impressive performance against newly crowned Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen at the London Stadium in midweek in the second-leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie. They were eventually held to a 1-1 draw on the night, though, and lost by three goals to one on aggregate.

Despite their impressive performance, David Moyes is under a bit of pressure in charge of the Hammers after a really underwhelming year so far for the Irons. They finished 2023 with victories over Manchester United and Arsenal but have managed just four victories in 20 matches across all competitions this year.

THE TEAM NEWS

CRYSTAL PALACE

Oliver Glasner has confirmed that Colombian international defensive midfielder Jefferson Lerma will be missing for the next few matches due to an injury sustained last weekend.

Both Joel Ward, who was on the bench last week, and Will Hughes need to be assessed ahead of this one with Rob Holding and Chris Richards returning to training.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Clyne, Andersen, Tomkins; Muniz, Wharton, Riedewald, Mitchell; Olise, Eze; Mateta

UNAVAILABLE: Johnstone (Injured), Guehi (Injured), Doucoure (Injured) Franca (Injured), Rak-Sakyi (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Holding (Injured), Richards (Injured), Ward (Injured), Hughes (Injured)

WEST HAM

David Moyes said that Moroccan international defender Nayef Ageurd will have to have his injury assessed after he was forced off against Bayer Leverkusen the other day.

Jarrod Bowen was ‘tough and go’ but started the game against the German champions before appearing fatigued before full-time. Both Alphonse Areola and Kalvin Phillips also need to be ‘checked’.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Coufal, Soucek, Alvarez, Emerson; Paqueta, Kudus; Antonio

UNAVAILABLE: Earthy (Concussion)

QUESTIONABLE: Areola (Injured), Ageurd (Injured), Mavropanos (Injured), Phillips (Injured), Bowen (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In recent years, this London derby has been thrilling at Selhurst Park. There is also reason to believe both of these sides will be entertaining this weekend, too, with Crystal Palace finally beginning to show signs of adapting to Oliver Glasner’s 3-4-3 system. West Ham United’s 33 Premier League matches so far this season have consisted of 110 goals and both teams scoring would appear a good bet for this one this weekend.
