THE LOWDOWN

BRENTFORD

  • Brentford had a quiet transfer window with talk of a potential ban for Ivan Toney also going quiet as attention turns to that investigation. The Bees will be focused now on breaking into the top six and potentially earning European qualification for the first time in their history. Their most recent outing was a goalless draw at Leeds United a couple of weeks ago.
  • Shandon Baptiste is back in full training and has a chance of inclusion but the game comes just a little too soon for Pontus Jansson and Frank Onyeka.

SOUTHAMPTON

  • Nathan Jones had a poor start to his reign at Southampton before a mid-January improvement with cup wins against Crystal Palace and Manchester City preceding a victory at fellow relegation battlers Everton. The Saints have done some good business in the market, too, with the deadline day arrivals of Paul Onuachu and Kamaldeen Sulemana.
  • There are some doubts over Kyle Walker-Peters and Stuart Armstrong’s availability but full-back Tino Livramento is the only player who is definitively ruled out for the trip to the Gtech Community Stadium.

THE TEAM NEWS

BRENTFORD

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Raya; Ajer, Pinnock, Mee, Henry; Jensen, Norgaard, Janelt; Mbeumo, Toney, Wissa

UNAVAILABLE: Jansson (Fitness), Onyeka (Fitness)

QUESTIONABLE: Baptiste (Fitness)

SOUTHAMPTON

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Bazunu; Bree, Bella-Kotchap, Salisu, Walker-Peters; Lavia, Diallo; Elyounoissi, Ward-Prowse, Edozie; Adams

UNAVAILABLE: Livramento (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: McCarthy (Fitness), Larios (Injured), Walker-Peters (Injured), S. Armstrong (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Brentford are a smart and efficient side, under the management of Thomas Frank. The Bees have been more expansive than they were last season but have remained direct and pragmatic in their approach to picking up points at an impressive rate. They face a Southampton side that are beginning to improve and understand Jones’ three-at-the-back system but The Saints also have the flexibility and capability to play a similarly direct approach with Che Adams acting as a target man for the strugglers. Given the visitors’ recent improvement, a result is too close to call but it is unlikely to be a thriller for the neutral.

TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
