THE LOWDOWN

EUPEN

Last season, Eupen narrowly avoided Belgian Jupiler Pro League relegation with a 15th place finish, sitting just one point above the bottom three and the relegation places. The home team have moved on managerially, though, with the departure of Edward Still and appointment of former Wolfsburg boss Florian Kohfeldt. Kohfeldt’s last spell in charge of a club, with the German club, went quite badly as Wolfsburg followed up UEFA Champions League qualification in 2021 with a bottom-half finish in 2022 in Kohfeldt’s season in charge. The hosts are likely to face another battle against relegation.

WESTERLO

Westerlo were promoted back to the top-flight in the 2021/22 campaign and despite losing star striker, Lyle Foster, to Burnley in the January transfer window of the 2022/23 Jupiler Pro League season, they were one of the more impressive and definitely most entertaining sides to watch in the Belgian top-flight. They finished in the top eight, earning a spot in the end of season European playoff places, with their 34 regular season matches consisting of 114 goals. Jonas De Roeck remains in charge of De Kemphanen.

THE PREDICTED LINE-UPS

EUPEN

Eupen used their seemingly strongest eleven in a victory against Marseille last weekend with Kohfeldt deploying his preferred three-at-the-back system. They have pretty much a full strength squad available but will be without Bartosz Bialek, who is out for an unknown period of time with a knee injury.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Moser; Lambert, Filin, Paeshuye; Magnee, Mohwald, Baiye, Davidson; Bitumazala; Charles-Cook, Nuhu

UNAVAILABLE: Bialek (Injury)

QUESTIONABLE:

WESTERLO

Jonas De Roeck prefers a 4-4-2 system, which indicates how and why their aggressive and attacking style of football was produced. The visitors have a full strength squad available with no injuries or suspensions.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Bolat; Jordanov, Tagir, Seigers, Bos; Bernat, Van Eenoo, Van den Keybus, Matsuo; Frigan, Vaesen

THE PREDICTION

Despite Westerlo being by far the better team last season and the visitors’ high-scoring form throughout the campaign, the two meetings between these sides bucked both of those trends. Eupen won away to Westerlo early in the season by a goal to nil before the two sides shared a 1-1 draw in February. Florian Kohfeldt’s appointment should signal a more ambitious Eupen style of play and that score draw earlier this year is more of a trend to follow.
