Patrick Rivera: A hardened veteran aiming to earn his chance at the big leagues
Much like his latest opponent, Patrick Rivera (13-4) makes his Contender Series bow with a six fight win streak in tow. At 34, Rivera is a hardened veteran of the American regional circuit, with more than a decade’s worth of experience in the pro ranks to fall back on. He’s scored ten stoppages to date, with six KOs and four submissions to his name. However, he’s also been finished by regional level competition in the past, losing by submission on three separate occasions.
Adam Darby: "The Plank" touches down on the Contender Series in search of a big win
Currently riding a six fight win streak, Adam Darby (7-1) headlines Week 4 of the Contender Series following an impressive run in Cage Warriors. Unbeaten outside of a TKO loss in just his second pro fight, “The Plank” has six finishes split evenly between KOs and submissions. The 27 year old Irishman has been on a tear since returning from a near two year lay off due to hand injuries, going 4-0 while most recently earning a performance bonus for a first round ninja choke submission over Thiago Habib.
Patrick Rivera vs Adam Darby prediction
Darby looks to be solid value as a large favorite here.
The Irish prospect has looked pretty sensational since his return from an injury lay-off. He can stop opponents on the feet with his striking and he also has a nasty submission game in his back pocket to fall back on.
Rivera is a tough, crafty veteran, but he doesn’t look to have what it takes to slow Darby’s roll. While he has almost twenty fights under his belt, he’s only fought opponents with winning records on seven occasions. It’s also worth noting that he lost three of those bouts and was finished in all but one of them. Darby hasn’t fought the cream of the crop in Cage Warriors, but he’s got some solid wins to his name nonetheless.
“The Plank” is also an enormous welterweight, standing 6’3” tall. At 6’0”, Rivera isn’t tiny by any means, but I can envision the Irishman’s size and physicality advantage playing a part in proceedings here. He’s got the power to hand Rivera his first KO loss and the jiu-jitsu to find a choke if he’s unable to finish him with strikes.
Prediction: Adam Darby to win by stoppage
